BBC Sportsound pundit Tam McManus has said that it is "madness" for Rangers to go for Steven Gerrard and that it would be "even crazier" if he accepted.

He went on to say the whole thing was "bonkers" but "strangely exciting for Rangers fans."

McManus said that on a personal level he hopes the deal will be done as it would provide "blockbuster" material for the media.

The news that Rangers were in talks with Liverpool legend Gerrard, came after his odds were slashed following chairman Dave King being spotted at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Scottish Sun claimed that he was in talks with Rangers and that a deal to take over from Graeme Murty at Ibrox was close.

Football Insider verdict:

McManus is absolutely spot on. It's a crazy story, would be even crazier if it happens, and Rangers fans don't know if they want it or not. One thing is certain, the stories and the intrigue would be incredible, and there would be another film-like dimension to the Old Firm clashes, with Gerrard the student up against former mentor Brendan Rodgers. We desperately hope it will happen, as does every neutral in the world. Liverpool, Celtic and Rangers fans are all on the same page for once – they don't know if they want it or not.
