Maitland-Niles contract extension 'definite' after 'huge' Arsenal reveal - Campbell

A new Arsenal contract “is a definite possibility” for Ainsley Maitland-Niles if he continues in his rich vein of form.

That is the view of former Highbury favourite Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 24-year-old’s brilliant display against Watford.

Maitland-Niles produced a man of the match performance on Sunday as the Mikel Arteta’s side beat the Hornets 1-0 at the Emirates.

The centre-midfielder lined up alongside Albert Sambi Lokonga in the middle of the park in the absence of the injured Thomas Partey.

Speaking after the win, Mikel Arteta told club media Maitland-Niles is “a huge talent” who’s shown commitment since it was decided he would remain at the club this season.

The academy product has 18 months left on his current contract.

When asked by Football Insider if a new contract could be in the offing, Campbell said: “A new contract is a definite possibility.

“Every time Maitland-Niles comes into the team now he looks focused. There has been no lapses in his performances. He has done the job.

“I was very impressed with him on Sunday. There were two or three players who could have got man of the match and he was one of them. He was brilliant.

“It was a new partnership in midfield to start the game. Both Maitland-Niles and Lokonga did really well.

“Maitland-Niles has great energy and he can play. I hope it continues. We need as many home-grown players at the club as possible.”
