TalkSport host Alan Brazil has revealed that he doesn’t understand why Brendan Rodgers didn’t sign new Rangers defender Jon Flanagan for the Hoops.
Flanagan made his breakthrough for Liverpool when Rodgers was in charge at Anfield, and Brazil can’t understand why the Hoops boss allowed his old Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to swoop in and sign the 25-year-old for the Gers.
“When I think back to Flanagan’s breakthrough season at Liverpool, it strikes me that Brendan Rodgers was in charge” Brazil said, as qouted by the Sunday Post.
“That makes me wonder why, if Flanagan’s as good as Steven Gerrard reckons he is, Brendan has never tried to land him for Celtic?
“I suppose we’ll get an answer to that one in due course.”
Football Insider verdict
Brendan Rodgers will have his own reasons for not wanting to bring Jon Flanagan to Celtic Park. Perhaps his off-field problems were a factor or the fact that he has rarely played any football in the last two seasons played a part in the decision. There’s also the chance that Rodgers thinks that his current right-back – Mikael Lustig – is a better player at this moment in time than Flanagan. Rodgers knows what type of Flanagan is, and perhaps he felt that the time wasn’t right to bring the player to the East End of Glasgow. Steven Gerrard, who will also be very familiar with Flanagan, must feel that the player still has plenty to offer as a player, which is why he has decided to bring him to Ibrox. Alan Brazil seems to be reading too much into this, as it seems that the Hoops never showed any interest in buying the player, and the Gers did.
