Man City could block Arsenal move for Morgan Rogers – ‘they want a deal done first’

Morgan Rogers is being considered as a potential transfer target by Manchester City as they aim to beat Premier League rivals to his signature.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed another strong season for Aston Villa, guiding them to Champions League qualification and Europa League success, but could now move on.

Interest has grown from a number of top clubs including the likes of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, but Man City could move quickly if he becomes available.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that City chiefs have been keeping close tabs on Rogers since he left the club in 2023.

The England international has gone from strength to strength since leaving the Etihad, and will now go to the World Cup, where his displays could impact Man City’s transfer plans.

Could Man City move to re-sign Morgan Rogers?

Brown previously told Football Insider that Man City have been keeping tabs on Rogers, with scouts impressed by his displays since his move to Villa Park.

A number of elite clubs have sat up and taken notice of the England international over the last 12 months, with speculation over his future seemingly constant.

Ahead of what is set to be a busy transfer window for Man City following Pep Guardiola’s exit, they could look to Rogers to fill any gaps in their squad.

“It wouldn’t surprise me to see Rogers go back to Man City,” Brown told Football Insider.

“They’ve been keeping a close eye on him since he left a few years ago, first at Middlesbrough and now at Villa, and he looks to have brushed off any concerns.

“The reason he was allowed to leave City in the first place is because they had concerns about his attitude and commitment, but he’s eased those concerns now.

“It’s going to be a busy summer for Man City, there are players who could be on their way out and will need replacing, especially in those forward areas.

“With Guardiola leaving, it looks like there could be a lot of change. It looks like Enzo Maresca will be coming in, so it could depend on how he feels.

“But from a City point of view, when you see Arsenal are interested in Rogers, or PSG, they won’t want one of their former players to go and strengthen their rivals.

“If he’s going to be available, they will want to beat those other clubs to him and get a deal done first, because it strengthens them while stopping Arsenal.

“Rogers will go to the World Cup with England and we’ll see what happens after that, because if he has a good tournament, all of these clubs will be keen.”

How to Aston Villa feel about selling Rogers?

Despite growing interest from Man City as well as other clubs around Europe including PSG and Bayern Munich, Aston Villa will have the final say over his future.

The attacking midfielder signed a new contract at Villa Park earlier this season, with his new deal set to run until 2031, placing the club in a strong position.

Football Insider revealed in March that Aston Villa will demand over £100million for Rogers if they are to let him leave Villa Park in the summer transfer window.

However, that lofty price tag is not believed to have put off the interested clubs, with some of the richest clubs across Europe among those keeping an eye on him.

Should the England international impress at the World Cup, interest is likely to grow, and it could become increasingly difficult for Villa to prevent his exit.
