Man City news: Expert can't believe Bernardo Silva could quit for £80m after latest

Noel Whelan has urged Man City not to part with Bernardo Silva this summer after they reportedly slapped an £80million price tag on his head.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, tipped the 27-year-old to strike up a fruitful partnership with elite hitman Erling Haaland – who has finalised his summer move from Borussia Dortmund.

According to the Daily Mirror (11 June), Man City will demand “in excess of £80million” from Barcelona – who are interested in securing the signing of Silva this summer.

The former Monaco star has three years left to run on his current deal, but the report claims City are looking to hand him an extension.

Silva notched 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions in 2021-22 as Pep Guardiola’s side lifted a fourth Premier League title in five years.

Whelan suggested even £80million would represent good value for any potential suitors.

“He’s been one of the most consistent players for Man City in every season since joining,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He was close to leaving last summer, but what a revelation he was in the 2021-22 season.

“On his day, he’s just one of these players you can’t defend against.

“£80m doesn’t seem a bad figure from a buyer’s perspective, especially as he has another three or four years of his best football ahead of him.

“I would be really reluctant to sell him if I were Man City.

You’ve got Erling Haaland coming in who would thrive from having his quality.

“What’s the point of bringing Haaland in if he’s not going to get the service?”
