Man City news: Pundit verdict on Ruben Dias injury derailing title bid after confirmed news
Ruben Dias’ injury will not derail Man City and their bid to retain the Premier League title, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Fernandinho is more than capable of filling the void left by the 24-year-old for the remainder of the season.
Dias was forced off with a muscle injury in Man City’s 5-0 win over Newcastle United at the Etihad on Sunday.
Speaking to club media (8 May), Pep Guardiola revealed the problem would rule the Portugal international out for the rest of the 2021-22 campaign.
John Stones and Nathan Ake have also been ruled out for the remainder of the season because of injury.
However, Whelan believes City have enough strength in depth to get the title over the line.

“They have players who are capable of stepping in and doing a job at centre-half,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“Someone like Fernandinho has good amount of experience playing in that role. He is still a quality player and is still one of the best in the Premier League in my opinion. He makes the game look so easy at times.
“I’d have no problem with Fernandinho partnering Laporte back there. It is still a formidable back line. It just shows the strength in depth these teams have over the others.
“I think City are fully focused on the job in hand now. The best way to put their Champions League disappointment to bed is by winning the Champions League and they are in pole position right now.”
