Finance guru salutes 'very smart' Man City as behind-the-scenes deal details emerge
The “very smart” Man City commercial department deserve credit for their latest triumph.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City’s new commercial deal with media company Recast.
The 2021-22 Premier League champions announced earlier this month (27 July) that they had teamed up with the direct-to-consumer streaming company.
Recast have acquired the rights to stream selected pre-season friendlies and are also in the process of creating a documentary about their most recent title-winning campaign.
The new agreement was struck on a micro-payment basis, meaning City receive cash for every individual view their content receives via Recast.
Plumley explained the merits of this setup, which he believes comes with very little attached risk.

“City are often at the forefront of stuff like this,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“Their commercial team has some very smart people in it by the looks of some of the things like this that we see.
“It’s very low-cost and low-risk. You wouldn’t anticipate it generating huge amounts but every little helps no matter how big a club you are.
“If City can generate a little bit of extra revenue and also test the water in a new field, it’s a win-win.”
City earned £297million in media income in 2020-21, the last financial year on record.
That figure is expected to rise again when they release their accounts for 2021-22.
