Medical insider: Kalvin Phillips lamenting surgery mistake amid Man City latest

Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is likely lamenting his decision not to undergo shoulder surgery at an earlier date now that he is a doubt for England’s World Cup squad.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Phillips signed for City from Leeds United in July but has played a total of just 13 minutes across three appearances for his new club.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been struggling with a persistent shoulder issue, which dates back to his time at Elland Road, since his arrival at the club.

Phillips has not been selected for England’s upcoming Nations League double-header because he is facing surgery to correct the issue, as per Sky Sports last Saturday (17 September).

And with his spot at the winter World Cup now in doubt, Phillips may wish he had chosen to have the procedure earlier, claims Dinnery.

“This is nothing new,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

He has had ongoing issues since October 2020, but the main one was May 2021. He suffered a shoulder dislocation.

Had the Euros not been delayed from 2020, that might have been a good opportunity to go under the knife at that stage. But that was probably pushed to the back of his mind because he wanted to feature for England.

Now, we are getting to the stage where he hasn’t started a game this season.

Yes, the possibility of surgery will call into question his availability for the World Cup. On the other hand, can Gareth Southgate call upon someone like Phillips who has had one Premier League minute this season?

It’s a bit of a catch-22 situation. The opportunity to get the surgery done at least gives him a fighting chance of going to the World Cup.

As it stands, should there be some problem with the shoulder, you can’t afford to carry many players at a World Cup. I think these issues need to be addressed.
