Kieran Maguire lambasts Man United board after 'sad' Uefa finance reveal

It is no surprise to see Man United explicitly give their seal of approval to Uefa’s financial distribution model.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about recent remarks made by United’s finance director Cliff Batty.

As quoted by Sports Pro on Thursday (16 June), Batty revealed that United are against an overhaul of the European distribution model for the post-2024 Champions League.

The competition will welcome four extra teams ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, further engorging revenues for Europe’s elite clubs.

Batty reasoned “let’s not kid ourselves” about where the value in the European game comes from.

Maguire insists that the finance director’s comments are indicative of the “sad” prioritisation of profits above all else behind the scenes at Old Trafford

“We have seen via Project Big Picture and the Super League project exactly where the Man United board’s priorities lie,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Cliff Batty’s comments reinforce that. There is no interest in football. Sadly, it’s all about making money and all they want to do is keep a greater slice of the pie for themselves.

“I’m not surprised and I’m not even disappointed. Most people have seen the Glazers and know they are lickspittles for what they are.”

The Champions League will operate under a Swiss model league system from 2024, with two extra group-stage matchdays for each team.

United will play in the Europa League in 2022-23.
