Man United have been 'stung' for £40m+ after baffling Raphael Varane news - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Man United have been “stung” by their summer move for Raphael Varane as his injury woes deepen.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted he “can’t put his finger” on the reason for the 28-year-old’s sudden fitness problems.

Varane was sidelined as Man United lost 1-0 away at Everton on Saturday (9 April), meaning the Frenchman has made just 16 league starts for the club since signing in August 2021.

The former Real Madrid defender made more than 25 La Liga appearances in six of his last seven seasons with the club.

Varane, who has 85 caps for France, cost Man United a reported potential fee of £41million.

Whelan slammed the defender’s arrival as “a waste”.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He always performed for Real Madrid, didn’t he?

“He was continuously a part of that successful side for a number of years. But for some reason, and I can’t put my finger on it, he’s playing very little football for Man United.

“It seems like a waste, him being at the club.

“He was supposed to be the answer to the centre-half problem. He was slated as this massive partner for Harry Maguire. They’ve been stung by this move.

“They’ve failed yet again to sort this centre-half problem out. That partnership has never even got going.”

Man United sit seventh in the Premier League.

They bowed out at the Round of 16 stage in the Champions League – a competition Varane has won four times.
