Man United news: Campbell issues 'massive' claim after journalist's update on Cristiano Ronaldo ally hunt
Man United could revert to a 4-4-2 formation if they sign another "world-class striker" this summer.
That is the view of former Premier League strike Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the "massive problems" Cristiano Ronaldo and a strike partner could cause opposition next season.
According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenburg (11 April), the Red Devils are prioritising the signing of a striker to play next to Ronaldo.
United are also said to be targeting a central midfielder in similar stature to Nemanja Matic.
A United source told Football Insider (11 April) that Man United have decided on Ten Hag as their next permanent manager.
The club are set to trigger the 52-year-old's release clause at Ajax ahead of an official announcement.
When asked by Football Insider if Ten Hag could adopt a 4-4-2 formation if another world-class striker arrives, Campbell said: "4-4-2 isn't dead.
"It's a very flexible formation that would give United options. They would have to be better out of possession though.
"Listen, I think United would cause teams massive problems if they played a striker up top next to Ronaldo. I'm talking absolutely massive problems. To have two world-class strikers up front...
"The key would be who is behind them. They would need quality and disciplined players behind them for it to work."
Ronaldo has enjoyed a prolific second spell at Old Trafford.
He has scored 21 goals in 35 appearances.
