Paul Robinson is "surprised" to see Man United midfielder Bruno Fernandes topping the 'chances created' chart in the Premier League this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said the stat explains why Fernandes, 27, has cast a "frustrated" figure at Old Trafford this season.

Fernandes has been a regular in a Man United side set to post the club's lowest ever Premier League points total this season.

However, the Portugal international has created 109 chances in the 2021-22 campaign - more than any other player in the division. [Opta Analyst]

Those chances have only resulted in six assists for the attacking midfielder though.

When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs for his reaction to the stats, Robinson said: "That is surprising because he's had an indifferent season compared to previous years.

"Stats can be very misleading at times. You can use stats to prove a point but they don't paint the whole picture. When you are talking about chances created though, it's blatantly obvious.

"To have those numbers in a poor Man United team goes to show what a good player he really is.

"We have seen Fernandes frustrated on the pitch this season. At times you think, 'Get on with it. Stop moaning.' He has spent a lot of time sulking if you like. When you look at those stats you half understand it though."
