Medical expert issues 'disastrous' Marcus Rashford reveal after Man United latest

The data shows that Man United star Marcus Rashford had a disastrous campaign in 2021-22 – but he now has the chance to “wipe the slate clean” ahead of 2022-23.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Rashford suffered ith a shoulder injury throughout 2020-21 but delayed surgical treatment in order to play for England at the Euros last summer.

The forward started just 13 times in the Premier League in 2021-22 and his seasonal record of five goals and two assists was his lowest in United colours.

The Carrington academy graduate revealed via Instagram last Tuesday (7 June) that he had begun his own tailored fitness programme ahead of 2022-23.

Dinnery crunched the numbers and explained why the only way is up for Rashford.

“This is an opportunity for Rashofrd to wipe the slate clean,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“By his own previously high standards, last season was a disaster. He delayed his shoulder surgery to go to the Euros. That impacted on the start of the campaign.

“I did a study on those outfield players who were involved in last summer’s Euros. Nobody suffered more than Rashford in terms of a downturn. He had a downturn of 56 per cent in terms of minutes.

“His rolling average went from 2791 minutes the previous season down to 1233 in 21-22.

“Not only were we seeing a downturn in terms of availability but also the biggest downturn in terms of his performance metrics. It was a dramatic fall.

“He was on the cusp of doing something big but then he was fairly anonymous last season.

“He probably feels he has something to prove to himself. He will also want to show the new manager he is prepared to do something about it.”
