Enzo Fernandez to Man City 'will happen' - Stefan Borson reacts to Chelsea deadline

Enzo Fernandez is more likely than not to join Manchester City on a big-money deal from Chelsea this summer.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that anything can happen in a "completely bonkers" transfer window at the Etihad Stadium.

Enzo Maresca has already added Elliot Anderson to the squad, splashing £116million on the former Nottingham Forest man, with Ayyoub Bouaddi also of interest.

The latest reports would suggest that Lille's teenage sensation could soon be announced, with the Citizens potentially spending another £100m.

Now, with Chelsea setting a 5pm deadline on Friday, 14 August, Man City are facing a race against time to get a deal done for the Blues' No.8.

After spending a then-British-record-fee of £106.8m on the midfielder in 2023, the Blues now want £120m if they are to lose him ahead of 2026-27.

Man City are in a 'completely bonkers' transfer window

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson admitted his surprise at Man City's transfer business, but refused to rule out the blockbuster deal going through.

"If you'd have said to me at the start of the summer, they'll buy three €100m-plus or £100m, potentially plus, midfield players..." he said.

"I'd have said you were completely bonkers. Clearly, it's perfectly possible they do it. I think Bouaddi will happen. Anderson has happened.

"And I would think there's a very good chance that Fernandez happens because there's a very good chance that Rodri goes.

"Chelsea have done a great job in terms of sort of repositioning what people think the fee might be, despite everything that's happened with Fernandez.

"I think it's more likely to happen than not, but I just don't think City are going to table £120m by five o'clock."

Where would Fernandez rank in Premier League's all-time most expensive transfers?

It is understood that Chelsea are not budging from their £120m price tag, and neither should they after splashing so much on his signature.

Currently, Alexander Isak is the most expensive Premier League signing of all-time, arriving at Liverpool for £125m last summer.

Of course, the deal hasn't quite worked out yet, but the 2026-27 campaign could be a breakthrough for the Sweden international if he can stay fit.

Morgan Rogers' £117m move to Chelsea has seen him move second this summer, with Anderson in third, thanks to his £116m price tag.

Fernandez would overtake both at £120m, though. He wouldn't be expensive enough to take top spot in the all-time list, however.
