'It's very interesting' - Norwegian scout shares what he's noticed about Erling Haaland ahead of Liverpool vs Man City

Published on:

Erling Haaland is facing a slight drop in form ahead of Manchester City's important trip to face Liverpool on Sunday.

That is the opinion of experienced former Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa scout and Scandinavian football expert, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The 26-year-old did not score against Portugal or Wales in his last two Nations League games for Norway, and missed countless chances in the other game against Portugal.

Haaland had been on a run of seven consecutive games of scoring across all competitions, but will now be challenged to end his goal drought at Anfield.

The huge clash comes with additional narrative following news in the international break that Man City have been found guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League's financial rules.

The Citizens have appealed the verdict and will hope to escape any punishment, but currently remain vulnerable to a possible points deduction or even expulsion.

Erling Haaland 'had relatively little effect'

Though the public position from Man City has been united and strong, it is hard to imagine that news of the verdict has not affected the players.

In a realistic scenario, many of them could soon be looking for a new club amid an impending relegation to the Championship.

Haaland would almost certainly be among them, but he will now be asked to get his head straight ahead of a key clash.

"As we said before, 11 against 11. Now, you can have the best 11 players in the world, but it doesn't mean to say that the best 11 players are going to perform as the best team on the day," King told Football Insider.

"This is a game which is very, very interesting for a lot of reasons. And one of them is going to be that, although Erling Haaland scored against Denmark, he had relatively little effect.

"He had chances against Portugal and also against Wales, but everybody's going, 'yeah but he's got to have the service.'

"If the service is not coming in the box, how's he going to score? And in those two games, that's certainly what happened. The service seemed to dry up.

"You don't want to see Erling Haaland back on the half way line trying to pick the ball up and run at people. You want him in the box."

What has Haaland said?

Upon his return to Man City this week, Haaland has spoken directly to the club's supporters.

"We have to stick together, stay with each other, stay positive," the Norway international said.

"No matter what happens in life, we always have to have a smile, stay positive, look ahead, and try to win football games, enjoy the situation.

"We have to stick together, spread the love to each other, stick together, enjoy the ride, smile. I think they [(the City fans] are gonna have a good time."
