Man City 'worried' about Phil Foden, this is why he still makes the starting XI

Manchester City have long-term concerns about Phil Foden after a major downturn in his performances in recent seasons.

The 26-year-old has suffered a noticable decline over the last two seasons and has transformed from one of the most highly-regarded players in England to one of the most frustrating.

Enzo Maresca has given him the platform to try and impress and get back to his best level, but after a petulant red card against Man United, he has only added to his problems.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man City are "worried" about Foden and his recent performances have led to growing doubts over his future.

He will now miss at least three games following his kick out at Bruno Fernandes, and given the emergence of Rayan Cherki and Iliman Ndiaye, could struggle to win his place back.

Why are Man City concerned about Phil Foden?

Brown told Football Insider last month that Man City are hoping to see Foden turn his form around under Maresca, with the boss looking to him as a key part of his plans.

The England international has started all but one game so far this season, including in the Champions League, but has not shown he can return to his previous performance levels.

After a disappointing showing against Man United, patience may now be starting to run out, despite hopes he could still return to his best.

"Phil Foden is still a very talented player and they want to see him get back to his best," Brown told Football Insider.

"That's why he's still playing every week, they want to give him the platform to perform and show he can still be the Phil Foden we all got used to seeing before the last couple of years.

"But there's no doubt he's a million miles off of the player he used to be and he's got to redeem himself and prove himself again.

"He's got all the talent in the world so it's still a possibility for him, but Man City are worried about him because over the last 12 months to two years he hasn't been the same player.

"The red card against Man United will only add to his problems, but it comes down to more than just ability, it's to do with his attitude and work ethic as well.

"Foden has been found wanting in that regard, he's been unable to impose himself on games, he drifts out of them, and Man City need to see him starting to do that."

What is the latest on Foden's contract situation?

New frustrations surrounding Foden's performances in recent weeks have grown alongside uncertainty surrounding his contract and long-term future at Man City.

The England international's current deal is set to expire next summer, and he has yet to put pen to paper on an extension, casting doubt over the club's stance.

Football Insider revealed in July that Foden has reached an agreement in principal over a new contract at Man City back in May, and was expected to reach a full agreement in due course.

However, there has been no formal announcement that the midfielder has signed a new deal, leading to question marks about whether they have progressed in talks.
