Manchester City are expected to learn the outcome of their appeal against the 114 breaches of the Premier League's financial rules in February or March, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League giants have protested the decision, which was made by an independent commission following a hearing that ended in 2024 and then announced last month.

City were found guilty of all but one of the Premier League's charges against them, which include numerous counts of a failure to provide accurate financial information and breaches of the rules.

Those at the Etihad Stadium vehemently maintain their innocence and their appeal is set to argue that evidence that proves as much was misinterpreted by the commission.

If their argument should prove unsuccessful, potential punishments could include points deductions, fines, transfer bans and even expulsion from the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca's Man City have started the season brilliantly, winning their opening six league games, but undoubtedly have a shadow hanging over them.

Man City handed potential survival date

Should Man City be unable to fight off all or most of the Premier League's charges, a hefty points deduction will be the minimum expected outcome.

A precedent has already been set in the cases of Everton and Nottingham Forest, who both breached the financial rules.

The Toffees were ultimately slapped with a six-point deduction on appeal for losing £20million more than they were permitted to over a three-year period, while Nottingham Forest were docked four points for a similar breach.

In comparison, Man City were found to have overstated their own profits by over £830m - a number that will almost certainly warrant a far large deduction.

Yet it remains unclear whether the Citizens will be given the chance to stay in the Premier League, with anything over 50 points likely to push them into relegation trouble even if they maintain their impressive start to the season.

Should the appeal decision and punishment be confirmed in February or March, Maresca will have time to understand his team's position and at least attempt to survive a potential drop.

Man City charges: Update on punishment and potential points deduction

Enzo Maresca can pin charges on wall

Maresca has been placed in an incredibly difficult position amid the ongoing charges. As manager, he serves as Man City's mouthpiece.

Yet in reality, he likely learned of the alleged breaches as the rest of the football world did, when they were announced in 2023.

This season, however, he can use them. With the Premier League and the football world largely against them, the Italian would not have to try overly hard to create a feeling of us versus them.

With a potential points deduction coming, Maresca and Man City will already be planning to show up the Premier League by producing as many points as possible regardless.
