'Phenomenal' - Finance Expert reveals unique Man United advantage

Manchester United have a unique advantage over many of their European rivals in that they can harvest and sell the data of their “phenomenal” global fanbase.

That is according to finance expert and new Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after United owner Joel Glazer took part in recent discussions surrounding a potential European Super League, as per the Daily Mail.

Few clubs in world football are better-placed to capitalise on the global interest that such a competition would generate.

A Kantar Media survey conducted in 2019 found that United have a global fanbase of 1.1billion.

And while Maguire questions the veracity of that figure, he also highlights how United stand to gain from their enormous intercontinental following.

“I take those figures with a large pinch of salt,” he told Football Insider.

“If it’s somebody in Tampa saying ‘Go United’ and that’s the extent of their support, then they can’t do much for the club.

“But from the club’s perspective, if they can get them to sign up to an app, you can start to track fans’ behaviour and things of this nature, then you can sell that data or utilise it yourself.

“Not many other clubs have that kind of phenomenal reach.

“So from a commercial point of view, they are doing the right things. There’s no doubt about that.”

The proposed European Super League would feature 16-20 teams from across the continent, including all of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six.’

It would likely commence after 2024 when UEFA competitions’ current sponsorship and broadcast deals come to an end.
