Gary Neville has told Man United exactly why they must agree Djed Spence deal

Gary Neville's previous praise of Tottenham full-back Djed Spence highlights why Manchester United must accelerate a move for his signature this summer.

Spence has emerged onto United's radar over the last few weeks after impressing at the World Cup with England.

He was a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel's squad as some big names were left at home, but proved why he was picked with several key performances.

Spence's future at Spurs has been up in the air for several months after he struggled for regular starts towards the end of the campaign under Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham have also signed Andy Robertson to play at left-back, while Pedro Porro is clearly first choice in Spence's preferred right-back area.

The 25-year-old could well end up at Old Trafford this summer, and such high praise from a legendary Red Devils full-back should be enough for Michael Carrick to go ahead with a move.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Man United are weighing up a move for Spence after Carrick was impressed with his World Cup performances.

He once impressed as Spurs beat United 1-0 back in February 2025, with Neville later naming him Man of the Match on Sky Sports and saying: "It isn’t an easy one to choose, but I think Djed Spence has been good as any for Spurs at left-back. Spence on that side has stuck to his task well.”

Spence featured 44 times for Spurs throughout last season, and he played a part in all eight of England's games in North America this summer.

Speaking prior to the second group game against Ghana, Neville made his feelings on Spence very clear, saying: "I think Spence is someone again who will play a big part in this tournament, whether it's right-back or left-back, because I think he's like a leech when he defends.

"He's very aggressive in his work and he's got a great tenacity about him. Spence also went forward very well when he came on (against Croatia) and nearly scored, so I do think there will be some tweaks in the defence."

His praise throughout the tournament did not end there, as the pundit and former United captain also spoke highly of the Tottenham man after England's exit to Argentina on the Peter Crouch Podcast.

Neville said: "Spence is a positive, he’s proven he can play at this level and defend one vs one."

It is clear that Neville thinks a lot of Spence, and would surely be happy with the 25-year-old taking up his old right-back spot at Man United next season.

Which other clubs are keen on signing Spence?

Spence is believed to be keen to impress De Zerbi this summer, but remains open to a move away from North London if he cannot be promised enough game time for next season.

Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Everton are keen to accelerate talks with Spurs for Spence, having targeted him for several weeks.

Tottenham are set to demand around £40million for his services, with several Serie A clubs also keen.

Spence has spent time out on loan in Italy before, and could be set to return to the league as Inter Milan reportedly line up a move.
