It wiManchester United fans have been lapping up Lisandro Martinez' rant against Old Trafford chiefs, but it could land him in trouble, sources have told Football Insider.

The Argentine international said what every supporter had been thinking about how the Red Devils have been run following the defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Many were left less than impressed with the summer transfer window, and it appears those feelings crept into the dressing room.

As I shared on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Martinez could now feel the consequences of his outburst.

The club hierarchy may be unwilling to let such public criticism go unchallenged.

With Martinez potentially facing some in-house punishment over the coming weeks.

Man Utd must handle Martinez situation carefully after outburst

Martinez' comments have landed Manchester United in hot water.

While they will want to make sure a similar scenario doesn't occur again, the fanbase have approved of the centre-back's outburst.

His comments came straight from the supporters' playbook, with their criticisms laid out clearly by a senior player.

And that could see the World Cup winner face disciplinary action at Old Trafford.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I stated: "Martinez was probably saying what most Manchester United fans have been saying for a while now: that the squad is not strong enough to compete for the highest honours.

"It is understood Martinez has been formally punished for his outburst with a fine. His comments will affect the rest of the squad, some will definitely agree with him and others may not.

"But look, I think for now Martinez is still a key part of Michael Carrick’s squad, and United will have to handle the situation carefully because he’s going to be needed for the rest of the season."

Michael Carrick has a decision to make over Martinez

This weekend will be interesting to see what happens with Martinez, and whether Carrick keeps him in the starting XI.

Even without the outbursts, his performances individually have been quite poor, and being dropped to the bench would not be much of a surprise.

However, with the fixture being against Leeds United, benching a key player now may not be ideal.

The Red Devils will not want to hand their opposition any advantage, particularly with the tensions already set between United and Leeds supporters.
