Man United's 'enormous' windfall revealed by Stefan Borson
Manchester United are set for an "enormous" financial windfall after returning to the Champions League in 2026-27.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the difference will be greatly felt behind the scenes.
Michael Carrick's side kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 win over Azerbaijan side Sabah FK on Thursday, 10 September.
It was the Red Devils' first game back in the competition since December 2023 when they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich.
Man United's next opponents will be far more challenging, travelling to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, 13 October.
Whether United can reach the knockout stages or not, the club's financial windfall could be as much as £100million for the current campaign.
Man United to earn '£100m' from Champions League
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson revealed that Man United's earnings could reach double digits in 2026-27.
"It's a lot. With a minimum of five home games, those are worth a lot for Manchester United," he explained.
"They're going to do close to a total of £100m, including match day. So, it's very important.
"There will be some additional cost there because we know that they increase the salaries of certain players. Not necessarily everybody, but certain players have Champions League clauses.
"There's some cost to offset. But it makes a very material difference to the financial side of things, being in the Champions League versus being in nothing.
"It's not like they were in the Europa last year and got to the final like they had in the previous season.
"Between the final in the Europa and and a knockout game in the Champions League, it's maybe £60m different. But this is £100m different from last year. It just makes such an enormous impact."
What are Man United's chances of European success?
United's chances of lifting the Champions League title are likely to have been boosted by their opening 4-0 win at Old Trafford.
According to Opta, Arsenal are favourites to win the competition, with Bayern Munich and Man City the most likely to battle Mikel Arteta's side.
Even after beating Sabah, Man United have a 3.89 per cent chance of winning the entire thing, but Carrick will be taking it one step at a time.
Right now, his team have a 43.58 per cent chance of reaching the last 16, with their chances of a quarter-final spot only dropping to 42.4 per cent.
