Sources: Man United’s chances of pulling off Scott McTominay deal revealed
Man United face an uphill battle to re-sign Scott McTominay as they focus on adding younger talent to their squad, sources have told Football Insider.
McTominay has been freshly linked with a return to Old Trafford ahead of the next transfer window.
United are reportedly keen on his signature after he resumed Napoli first-team training following heart surgery.
The Scottish international underwent a minor procedure to correct irregular heart rhythms in Manchester last month and is soon set to return to action.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, the Red Devils are unlikely to complete a move for his services anytime soon.
United's chiefs are looking toward the future and 29-year-old McTominay, who turns 30 in December, does not fit the profile of midfielder they want to sign.
Scott McTominay's Man United return is not on the cards
McTominay has excelled away from Old Trafford, winning the Serie A title and MVP award in his debut season at Napoli in 2024-25.
He bagged 14 goals in 44 appearances last season and remains a key player for his club, with United not set to make an approach for his services anytime soon.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I would say it's unlikely that he returns to Manchester United. He's 29 now, and is turning 30 in December, so is coming to the latter stages of his career.
"He's had a great time in Italy. He's been amazing for Napoli, helping them win the league two seasons ago, and obviously he's been a proven performer for Scotland as well."
Wayne Rooney has urged Man United to complete McTominay return
United bolstered their midfield ranks with several signings over the summer window.
They are believed to be prioritising additions in other positions in the next few transfer windows, yet fans have continued to urge the club to bring McTominay back to his boyhood club.
Even a club legend like Rooney has insisted that Michael Carrick's squad would benefit from his return.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show in June, he stated: "I couldn’t believe Man United let him go when they did because he obviously works extremely hard, and at the time they let him go, he was actually one of the players who you wanted on the pitch every week because you felt like players weren’t working or weren’t giving the best and he was impactful.
"He was playing in a more advanced role and he was scoring important goals. When Man United let him go, I was thinking, 'wow, what’s going on here?' But you’d love to have him back at Man United now."
