Stefan Borson reveals the compensation Man United will have to pay Brighton for Fabian Hurzeler

Manchester United would have to splash out to appoint Fabian Hurzeler as Michael Carrick's replacement this season.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Brighton would receive double-digit millions in compensation.

Carrick is under growing pressure at Old Trafford, with his side sitting 12th in the Premier League table and being knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

The Red Devils are competing in the Champions League for the first time in a few seasons, but have only faced Azerbaijan side Sabah FK so far.

Football Insider understands that, as a potential replacement, Man United are "very keen" on Hurzeler, who has already impressed in 2026-27.

The Seagulls convincingly beat Arsenal 3-0 before the international break, prompting interest, not just from United, but also from Tottenham Hotspur.

Fabian Hurzeler hire would be 'very expensive'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes that the Red Devils, or anyone interested, would have to fork out £15million for the manager's signature.

"£10m-£15m, probably nearer £15m these days. It will be expensive now. And we do have transfer fees for managers," he said.

"Brighton are one of the smartest on this. When they signed him up to whatever the last contract was, they will have known.

"There's a pretty good chance that if they're right about their assessment of his quality, that in due course, two, three years, one of the big clubs are going to come along and they're going to want the manager.

"And they cover themselves for exactly that scenario by making sure that they're getting £10m-£15m guaranteed, maybe even a bit more with the rest of his coaching site coaching and team."

Man United could be out another £10m

The bookmakers clearly believe that Carrick is under major pressure, with his odds to be sacked dropping with each passing game so far.

Previously speaking on the topic, Borson told Football Insider that sacking the current manager could cost upwards of £10m.

That, combined with Hurzeler's fee, would be a huge financial blow, especially this early in the campaign, but many will feel that there is no choice.

Man United are trying to be one of the most cost-effective clubs in the top-six, but a change of money would drastically change their recent spending.
