Scott McTominay is on the radar of many Premier League clubs but the chances of a romantic return to Manchester United are not currently high, sources have told Football Insider.

The Scottish midfielder has been enjoying his football out in Italy with Napoli, where he has been a significant cog in their machine.

McTominay was a standout performer for the Naples-based club when they lifted the 2024-25 season.

His history in England has often linked him with a return to the club where things first started, Manchester United.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, while a return to Old Trafford looks unlikely, other Premier League clubs could look to sign him.

With McTominay's priority over his next steps now being shared.

Scott McTominay could attract Premier League interest beyond Man United

McTominay is currently prioritising getting back to full fitness following heart surgery, rather than his future.

The Scottish midfielder is sure to attract plenty of interest in the coming transfer windows, but Man United are not expected to bring him back.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I revealed: "I would say it’s unlikely that he would return to Manchester United.

"He’s had a great time in Italy, he’s been outstanding for Napoli helping them win the league two seasons ago, and obviously he’s been a proven performer for Scotland as well, so it wouldn’t surprise me if other Premier League clubs could potentially look at Scott McTominay.

"He’s such a big hero for the Napoli fans there as well they won’t want to consider letting him leave any time soon."

"The main thing for McTominay is to work his way back to fitness now having had that heart surgery as well, and that’s been the key for him to get back to full fitness in that respect.

"But look, there’ll always be Premier League interest in McTominay because of what he previously did in the Premier League with Manchester United and obviously what he’s shown for Scotland and Napoli over the last couple of years."

McTominay has refused to keep Premier League door open

When it comes to his future, McTominay has suggested he may remain in Italy for many years to come.

Effectively shutting down any talk of his potential return to England's top flight.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italy in February 2026, McTominay stated: "The future is very important, and I could see myself in Naples for a long time."

So, for any interested parties in the Scotsman, they are likely to face an uphill battle to convince the 29-year-old of their project.
