Manchester United will find it "difficult" to sign Atletico Madrid forward Giuliano Simeone in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Red Devils have the 23-year-old on their radar as a potential winter target, but it won't be easy for them to prise him away from the Spanish capital.

Simeone plays under his father Diego at the Wanda Metropolitano, and it is understood that the boss is "counting" on his son moving forward.

Sources say that United's "priority" for the upcoming window is to strengthen their defence, rather than add any more attacking options.

Michael Carrick's backline has faced significant questions in recent weeks, and the club are working to rectify that situation in January.

Simeone is a clear target for the Old Trafford side, but he is likely to be out of reach for them at this stage.

Man United pushing to sign Wesley

The entirety of United's defence is under scrutiny ahead of January, and they are hoping to add new faces across the board at the back.

Football Insider revealed on Monday that Roma right-back Wesley is one of their leading targets for the upcoming winter window.

The Brazilian's versatility is understood to be hugely appealing for the Red Devils, given that he can play in either full-back position.

United want to strengthen on both sides of the defence, while they are also hoping to add further depth to their centre-back ranks.

The club haven't upgraded their defence in recent years, and they feel that they are paying the price for that at the moment.

Man United doing 'due diligence' on Lisandro Martinez replacement

Former United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that his former club are doing their "due diligence" on several targets to potentially replace Lisandro Martinez.

The ex-recruitment man feels that the Argentine has put his future in jeopardy with his recent comments against the club hierarchy, and also lacks the consistency to stay at United.

Brown believes that Martinez is the prime candidate to be replaced at Old Trafford, especially since his contract is due to expire next summer.

Carrick's side have been under pressure to ignite their season of late, but they may need January to kick-start their campaign.
