West Ham star Crysencio Summerville close to agreeing move after Man United talks collapse
Manchester United are set to miss out on another West Ham player this summer with Crysencio Summerville close to joining Roma.
The Serie A club have offered around £49million for the 24-year-old, with a move understood to be close to completion.
Sources say Summerville is keen to move to Italy and negotiations are set to advance in the coming days.
The Netherlands international impressed at the World Cup and was among few bright spots for the Hammers in their ultimately unsuccessful fight against relegation.
Man United held talks over a deal for Summerville, but have opted against making a formal move due to Marcus Rashford's situation.
The England international had been expected to join Barcelona on a permanent deal this summer, but now looks set to stay at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old's huge wages make business elsewhere difficult, although Michael Carrick's team are keen to sign another winger.
Nicky Butt told Man United to sign Crysencio Summerville
Summerville has been highly rated for some time. The winger came through the academy at Leeds United and immediately looked promising.
His breakthrough season saw him enjoy a stunning four-game run of scoring in the Premier League, including a winner at Anfield.
When Leeds were relegated, the Dutchman went down with them, scoring 19 goals and providing nine assists in the Championship as they narrowly missed out on promotion.
That form earned Summerville a move to West Ham worth up to £30m, and after an injury-hit first season at the London Stadium, he came alive.
Just as he had for Leeds, the forward scored in four consecutive Premier League games in January and remained a threat throughout the remainder of the campaign.
Speaking last month, Man United legend Nicky Butt said: "He's an explosive player, he's good to watch, but I don't think he's consistent enough. However, the money shouldn’t be a lot to get him, and United have to build a squad.
"It can’t be all about going and getting the superstar signings. Summerville was brilliant for the Netherlands in the first game, so he could potentially start every week for Man United.
"I'm looking at him thinking he’s got to get a lot more consistent to get to the next level. But I'd still definitely look at signing a player like him."
Man United forced to trust Marcus Rashford
Just 18 months ago, Rashford's Man United career looked to be over. The winger had been cast out by Ruben Amorim and was on consecutive loan spells.
After a strong loan at Barcelona, which saw him score 14 goals and provide 11 assists, a permanent move there seemed almost guaranteed.
However, Rashford remains at Man United and now looks increasingly unlikely to go anywhere.
Carrick now appears faced with the task of mending the relationship between the 28-year-old and the club he looked determined to leave.
