Ruben Amorim made a brave call by dropping Marcus Rashford out of the Man United squad against Man City, according to the club's former scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club's most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the boss will not hesitate over disciplinary action if he feels it is necessary.

This comes amid reports that new concerns have emerged about the 27-year-old's lifestyle, although Amorim explained that was not the reason for his exclusion.

Instead, the United boss called on Rashford to prove he deserves a place in the team in training and make himself undroppable.

Brown has insisted this willingness to tackle his issues, be it outside of football or in training, is long overdue and something previous managers had shied away from.

The winger's status as a hero among fans and one of their academy products, it is said, can cause hesitation - but Amorim has not been afraid to tackle the situation head-on.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience working closely with players and managers at the very top level, has insisted the ball has been placed firmly in the forward's court to go out and prove himself after the City incident.

"This has happened on far too many occasions now," he told Football Insider.

"Questions have been raised his commitment to the club and his performances as a result.

"Managers have been loathed to leave him out because he's a fans' favourite and local boy.

"But it can't keep going on like that, if he's not performing then he's not performing.

"You hear things in the news about him going out clubbing and trips to Ireland or America or wherever, and you have to ask whether its affecting his training.

"Amorim is in the best position to deal with it, because he's only just come to the club and he owes him no loyalties so if that stuff is true, it will be addressed.

"Then, if he's made an example of him by leaving him out against City, then good on him. He needs to stick to his guns because it's a brave call to make.

"He's put the ball in Marcus' court - now what is he going to do about it? He's got to prove himself."
