'Massive coup' - Exclusive: Phillips reacts as Leeds United plan swoop for PL ace

Kevin Phillips has claimed Ben White just “gets better and better” and insisted it would be a “massive coup” if Leeds United were to sign him this summer.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the Whites hopes of signing the 22-year-old permanently were slim and saw a second loan deal as more probable.

Victor Orta, Leeds’ director of football, faces an uphill battle to sign the centre-half this summer with Brighton reluctant to let go of White unless their £35million price tag is met.

Football Insider understands that the English defender is happy in Leeds and is a highly popular member of the dressing room at Elland Road.

White made 49 appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season and helped them secure automatic promotion.

When asked by Football Insider if he expected White to return to Elland Road this summer, Phillips said: “It is going to be a tough one.

“He has been a fantastic player for them this season.

“This all depends on how ambitious Leeds are going to be. I am reading reports that they are looking at Cavani and Ibrahimovic and if that is true, blimey, they are ambitious.

“If they could tie White down it would be a massive coup for the football club because, as we have said all season, he just gets better and better and better. A great goal against Charlton as well.

“A second loan is an option but I am sure Brighton would have something to say about that.”
