'Massive' Son-Tottenham breaking news thrills ex-striker

Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Son Heung-min after the forward agreed a new blockbuster contract with Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and Middlesbrough striker claimed the 29-year-old's committal to Nuno Espirito Santo's project is "massive" for the club.

Son's current agreement has two years left to run and there has been interest from the likes of Bayern Munich in his signature.

Whelan claimed the winger is Tottenham's second most important player behind Harry Kane.

"When you put Harry Kane to one side, the driving force in their side is Son," he told Football Insider's Dylan Childs.

"He has been so consistent over the years and a great servant to the club.

"Spurs will need somebody who stands up and changes the rhythm of a game if Kane leaves. Son is definitely capable of doing that. He is one of the strongest, mentally, out there.

"The fans absolutely love him, as has every manager he has worked under. This is massive that he's committed to the project over the next few years."

Harry Kane has made clear his intention to leave Spurs in this transfer window.

As revealed by Football Insider (July 9th), Manchester United are currently in pole position to sign Kane just weeks after Man City had a £100million bid for the striker rejected.
