Noel Whelan claims that Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan is facing his last chance to prove himself after moving on loan to Birmingham City last month.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds forward insists that the 27-year-old’s spell at St Andrew’s is “massively important” for his future as a player.
Hogan has joined the Blues temporarily from Villa until the end of the season after cutting a disappointing loan spell at Stoke City short during the January window.
Having seen the Republic of Ireland hitman struggle at Villa, Sheffield United and Stoke over the last couple of years, Whelan suggests his time with Garry Monk’s men could determine where is future lies.
Asked if this was Hogan’s last chance to prove himself, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah, I think so, I think this was massively important, how he got going at Birmingham.
“I think that is something that is huge for his career, there’s a lot of pressure on him by the way, so he’s managed to go and do that, he’s getting goals and we know that strikers thrive on confidence.
“He’s got that confidence and belief back in his game that he probably didn’t have at Aston Villa. Birmingham saw something in a player that wasn’t being used or getting the best out of at Aston Villa and now he’s looking like a player that most sides would like to have in their side in the Championship.”
Hogan has only scored 10 times in his 61 appearances for Aston Villa, having joined the club from Brentford back in 2017.
He has three goals in as many games at Birmingham, having managed to score just twice for both Stoke and Sheffield United.
