Agbonlahor: Aston Villa will soon have better squad than Tottenham after source's transfer update today
Aston Villa will have a better squad than Tottenham if they complete the signing of James Ward-Prowse and one other player.
That is the view of Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider as Villa step up their pursuit of the Southampton captain.
Football Insider learned today (June 12) Villa have registered their interest in Ward-Prowse amid doubts over their midfield options.
They have already confirmed the capture of Emiliano Buendia after beating Arsenal to the deal.
“If you look at how Aston Villa play, you could easily play Ward-Prowse on the right,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“You could have him on the right, Grealish on the left with Buendia behind Watkins. Then you’ve got an attacking threat who can run with the ball in Watkins, Buendia and Grealish. Ward-Prowse could be the extra cover for the sitters and on the right side as well.
“It would be the perfect signing. The player who wins the most fouls (Grealish) and the best free-kick taker in the league. It makes sense.
“Southampton had a disappointing season and they love to sell their players. It all adds up. I’m sure Ward-Prowse would love to come and would be a great signing. They’ve got a history of selling and that will be another one.
“I watched the final England friendly game against Romania and he was outstanding, the best player on the pitch. He was very unlucky not to make the Euros squad.
“I’m becoming a big fan of his. Get him over the line and another signing and Villa are favourites for top six. They’ve got a better squad than Everton, you’d take it over Spurs.”
