Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted he's disappointed Ezri Konsa did not make the England squad after his fantastic performances for Aston Villa this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Villa captain insisted the decision is especially baffling as the out of form Eric Dier was selected ahead of Konsa by Gareth Southgate.

Konsa has played 26 Premier League games this season and has been a key player in a Villa defence that has kept 14 clean sheets all season.

In contrast, Dier has not featured in any of Spurs' last five Premier Leauge games - including Sunday's game with Villa.

“For me, it’s very disappointing - he’ll be disappointed too,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Players like Konsa, Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane and Lewis Dunk are so unlucky to not make the squad because for me every single one of them is better than Eric Dier. It’s a shame they haven’t been selected.

“What’s more frustrating is that if you haven’t played for England before and you’re not in the last squad before the Euros I don’t think there’s much chance of making the Euros. I don’t think Southgate’s going to select somebody who hasn't played for England before for the Euros - especially a defender, he might do it for an attacker.

“Konsa must be very disappointed. If I was him, I’d keep working hard and hopefully, he can get there one day.

“He’ll be looking at the performances of Eric Dier and be thinking ‘I’m playing a lot better than him.’”

After Konsa's snub, Dean Smith hailed his centre-back as "Mr Consistent".

He added: “I'm never surprised that a player isn't in an international squad because it's not my choice, it's somebody else's, but I'm sure he's been talked about.
