Sam Allardyce will step down at West Brom if he fails to keep them in the Premier League, Football Insider has learned.

The former England manager agreed a deal in December that runs for 18 months, although it is believed to include a break clause that can be triggered at the end of this season.

A West Brom source has told Football Insider that neither party expects Allardyce to stay on if the club drop down to the Championship.

The 66-year-old takes his side to Crystal Palace on Saturday hoping to seal the win that can kick-start a great escape.

But the Midlands outfit are rooted in the bottom three and remain eight points adrift of safety.

Allardyce has publicly been non-committal over his future beyond this campaign.

He replaced Slaven Bilic at the helm with West Brom 19th in the table and on just seven points.

The experienced Premier League manager negotiated a deal in which he will receive a £2million bonus if he keeps the Baggies up.

Allardyce guided Palace to safety after taking over in December 2016, when they were 17th in the table.

But the prospect of a first-ever Premier League relegation on his CV is now looking almost inevitable.

West Brom are vying to become only the second team with as few as 18 points after 28 Premier League matches to avoid relegation.

Portsmouth were able to do so from that point in the 2005-06 season.
