Paul Robinson has suggested Arsenal will miss out on signing Douglas Luiz in January as Aston Villa will be unwilling to sell.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United goalkeeper said Villa are likely to keep hold of the 24-year-old in January.

On 10 September, sources told this site that Arsenal are still working on a deal to sign the Brazil international.

The Gunners submitted a series of bids worth up to £25million during the summer transfer window but Villa stood firm with their valuation of £30million.

Mikel Arteta’s side are keen to sign the Brazilian in January after he made it clear that he wants to join the London club.

Luiz has entered the final 12 months of his deal at Villa Park.

Robinson suspects Steven Gerrard's side will not let the midfielder leave.

"There’s no point in selling him because they rejected bids in the summer for him," he told Football Insider.

"They obviously saw him as a member of the squad that would cost more to replace.

"Whether it be a player that they had to bring in and pay a loan fee for or a player they would have to buy, there’s no point in selling him in January, they may as well keep hold of him."

Luiz has made seven appearances for the Birmingham club so far this season across all competitions.

During those outings he has scored two goals.
