McAvennie can't believe Celtic treatment of 'wonderful' Rogic amid Postecoglou hint

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Tom Rogic is a "wonderful talent" and deserved to feature more often for Celtic last season.

That is according to ex-Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Ange Postecoglou's recent remarks about the 28-year-old the attacking midfielder.

When asked about Rogic in his media conference on 25th June, the new Parkhead boss said: “Does he fit into the style of football I want to play? Absolutely.”

Rogic, whose current deal runs until 2023, featured 21 times for Celtic in the league last season and just 10 of those appearances were starts.

And McAvennie is mystified by the 46-cap Australia man's relative lack of game time.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: "I like Rogic. He's a wonderful talent and I couldn't understand why he wasn't playing.

"He's far better than some of the players that were playing. I can't believe he wasn't getting a chance for whatever reason.

"Even if he fell out with Neil Lennon, he's the kind of boy you can trust not to down tools.

"He gives you everything until he comes off and he'd have put in more effort than a lot of the other players in the season just gone, that's for sure."

Postecoglou and Rogic know each other well after the manager's four-year stretch coaching the Australian national team.

Rogic has made 222 appearances, netted 40 goals and supplied 39 assists for the club since signing in 2013.
