Celtic tipped to sign new centre-back 'soon' after source's update - expert

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie expects Celtic to sign a new centre-back before the transfer window closes.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists his former side need cover with Christoffer Jullien taking longer to return from injury than expected.

Jullien, 28, has not played for Celtic since 30 December 2020 after picking up a knee injury.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider (10 January) Celtic have made it a top priority to sign two more forwards before the close of the transfer window.

However, McAvennie insists the club should be looking at bringing in support for Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

"Strikers are great, I just think we're a bit short at the back," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"Jullien isn't back from his injury yet and even when he's back it will take a while for him to get back up to speed.

"If he's going to be missing, I would like to see the club go out and bring in another centre-back.

"I think the manager is clever enough to know that's what he needs so, yeah, I think that will happen soon.

"We have such a talented attack and midfield now. I would just like to see a little bit more quality and depth in the defence.

"Take nothing away from Starfelt and Carter-Vickers, I thought they were both good against Hibs.

"But we are one injury away from the defence being a little bit shakey, in my opinion."

Celtic returned to Premiership action with a 2-0 win over Hibs on Monday night (17 January).

They are next ion action against Alloa on Saturday (22 January).
