Chris Sutton suggests Celtic lost out when goalscoring defender exited Parkhead
Chris Sutton has suggested that Celtic lost out when Charlie Mulgrew left Parkhead in August 2016 to sign for Blackburn. Mulgrew, 31, has been in outstanding form at Ewood Park this term as Sutton's former side try to earn promotion from the English League One. The 31-times Scotland international outstandingly scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season on Saturday as Blackburn beat promotion rivals Shrewsbury 3-1. The goalscoring defender was also handy at finding the net at Celtic Park during his six-year-long second spell at the Glasgow club between 2010 and 2016, but Sutton had admitted he has been blown away by the centre-back this season, and has suggested that it may have been the wrong move by Brendan Rodgers to let him leave. Mulgrew originally left Celtic in 2006 without making a senior appearance when he signed for Wolves. After a spell in England he returned north of the border with Aberdeen in 2008. The centre-back made 79 appearances for the Dons in all competitions before Neil Lennon made him his first signing for Celtic in 2010. Mulgrew went on to win five Scottish Premiership titles with the Hoops, making 208 appearances in all competitions and scoring 29 goals in the process. However he was never as prolific in front of goal as he has been with Blackburn this term, as a purple patch in November and December saw him net five goals in four consecutive League One games.
