Alan Hutton has suggested Liverpool have been shocked by Diogo Jota's impressive performances as an out-and-out centre-forward.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he has been "wowed" by the 25-year-old's first two seasons at Anfield.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo on Sunday (3 April), Jurgen Klopp confessed Jota has turned out to be "a little bit better" than they thought he could be after signing from Wolves.

The German boss went on to say the Portugal international is "growing into the top world-class striker role."

Hutton insisted Jota has taken his game to "another level" since joining the Reds.

Asked if he thought Liverpool had been shocked by Jota's proficiency as a centre-forward, Hutton told Football Insider's Russell Edge: "I think so, yeah.

"As first seasons go, I mean, wow. I knew he was an unbelievably talented football player but to come in and do what he's done?

"The front three that Liverpool originally had, you could never foresee that getting broken up.

"But now you've got this guy coming into the party and saying: 'Hold on a minute. I am good enough, I'm taking my game to the next level.'

"I think that's what's been most impressive. We did see the potential, we don't see a good player but he's gone on to another level now.

"It looks like the manager trusts him, he plays a lot of minutes and he is scoring the goals that Liverpool need, so happy days."

Jota has scored 33 goals in 71 games across all competitions for Liverpool.

He has netted 20 times in his 41 appearances this season.
