Chelsea are set for a massive exodus of stars to 'balance their books' when the season ends

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has suggested Chelsea could be forced into a fire sale before 30 June if they are to balance the books at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed that potential approach shows the Premier League's rules are not fit for purpose.

Premier League clubs can include any sales made on or before 30 June in their financial statement for the previous season.

Chelsea have spent a reported £400million on new faces in the 2023-24 campaign.

Premier League clubs are not permitted to lose more than £105million across three years - a rule Everton and Nottingham Forest have already fallen foul of.

The Blues sold Mateo Kovacic to Man City last year (2023) before the 30 June cut-off.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Chelsea are going to have to offload players early in the window - before the books are balanced on 30 June.

“Their business is going to be the big one to set the ripple effect going - if they don’t achieve their targets.

“They can then go out and spend again later in the window. That just shows to me that these rules and limits are being applied in the wrong way.

“There has to be an element of common sense that comes into this.

“Chelsea will target certain players, like Gallagher, to get maximum value as he came through the academy at the club.”
