Jak Alnwick is in advanced talks to join St Mirren shortly after being released by Rangers, Football Insider can reveal.

The SPL club offered a contract to Craig Gordon this month following the expiry of his Celtic contract.

But Gordon has decided against a move to the Paisley outfit and a source at the club has told Football Insider they have reached an agreement in principle with Alnwick.

The goalkeeper, who turned 27 earlier this month, ended his three-and-a-half year association with Rangers when he was let go at the end of last month.

He has spent the last two seasons on loan in England and had been on course to join Blackpool permanently in January following an impressive first half of this season at the League One side.

But Alnwick then suffered a broken arm last Boxing Day and the Covid-19 pandemic left his future up in the air.

St Mirren have been working on recruiting a new senior keeper after Václav Hladký quit when his own deal expired at the end of May.

Gordon, 37, has been on their radar but he is now close to agreeing terms with Hearts even though they will be in the Scottish Championship next season.

Alnwick is set to be in place at St Mirren for their pre-season campaign after recovering from the injury that was originally estimated to require a three-month rehabilitation period.

Alnwick has spent the entirety of each of the last two campaigns out on loan, first at Scunthorpe United and then at Blackpool.

The former England Under-20 international started the Lancashire club's first 22 league matches of the campaign and conceded just 24 goals while keeping seven clean sheets.
