Huddersfield Town are plotting a move to sign highly-rated Doncaster Rovers midfielder Ben Whiteman in January, Football Insider understands.

The 23-year-old central midfielder has attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs, with Hull City failing to complete a move for him in the summer transfer window.

A Huddersfield source has told Football Insider that Terriers boss Danny Cowley is a big admirer of Whiteman and sees him as a key transfer target as he looks to reshape his squad at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Terriers are languishing in 19th place in the Championship table, four points above the relegation zone, and Cowley is expected to be busy in the January transfer window in a bid to strengthen his squad options.

Doncaster are determined to keep hold of their captain Whiteman and the club tied him down to a new contract in November, which isn't due to expire until 2023.

However, they are bracing themselves for further interest in the all-action midfielder when the transfer window reopens next month as Whiteman is one of the most sought-after players in the Football League.

The 23-year-old has regularly featured for Darren Moore's side this season, with him racking up three goals in the 21 appearances he has made across all competitions.

Whiteman's efforts have helped see Doncaster sit 13th in League One with them acquiring 24 points from their opening 16 games.

The English midfielder, who can also operate on the right flank, joined Doncaster on a permanent basis from Sheffield United in January 2018, after previously having a loan spell with them.

Whiteman has appeared a total of 118 times for Rovers with him scoring 15 goals as well as registering seven assists in those outings.
