Leeds United are leading Aston Villa in the race to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow next month, Football Insider sources understands.

Championship hopefuls Leeds and Villa have targeted moves for Darlow as they look to bolster their goalkeeping options during the January transfer window.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Leeds are in pole position to land Darlow having held several rounds of talks with the goalkeeper's representatives.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is in the market for a new keeper after losing loan Chelsea signing Jamal Blackman to a broken leg with the keeper returning to his parent club for rehabilitation

Darlow has not figured in the Premier League this season for Newcastle with his only action coming in the Carabao Cup against former club Nottingham Forest back in August.

Bielsa is keen to bring in experienced cover and competition for current No.1 Bailey Peacock-Farrell and he sees Darlow as a vital addition to his plans.
