Paul Robinson is impressed with how quickly Gedson Fernandes has settled at Tottenham and insists fans can expect big things from the "top player".

The ex-White Hart Lane shot-stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, has refuted suggestions that the January arrival won't cut it at Spurs,

The midfielder joined on an 18-month loan deal in the winter window and the Lilywhites have the option to make the signing permanent in the summer of 2021.

Fernandes is still to make his first Premier League start since his arrival with just four substitute appearances to his name.

Robinson insisted the Portugal international will have a greater influence on the team over the next 12 months.

"I think he is a top player," he told Football Insider.

"He has not had enough time to have a massive impact on the squad. A young player that has adapted quickly in the small time that we have seen of him.

"Jose needs to put his own touch on the Spurs squad. It is a very unbalanced squad and they are heavily overloaded in certain positions.

"A two-year loan is a different one but Fernandes may have been brought in by Mourinho to address the imbalance in the squad.

"It is a very talented squad but they are light in some areas and Mourinho needs to be given time and a transfer window to correct that."

Giovanni Lo Celso and Harry Winks appear to be Mourinho's preferred partnership in midfield with Tanguy Ndombele and Oliver Skipp also vying for the positions.

Fernandes made his senior debut for Benfica at just 19 and made 57 appearances for his boyhood club before completing a move to north London earlier this year.
