Rangers' move for Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama faces collapse, sources have told Football Insider.

The Scottish giants were confident of landing the 22-year-old after agreeing a fee with Wednesday, but sources have said that the Championship club are ready to pull the plug on the deal.

Rangers are still keen to push through the deal for Gassama, but Wednesday's hierarchy are now having second thoughts on the move and it could see the switch fall through.

Rangers could miss out on Djeidi Gassama

Missing out on Gassama is the first major setback suffered by Rangers' new owners Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

The new owners have arrived with a bang, signing seven new players for Russell Martin, who arrived this summer to take the reins from caretaker boss Barry Ferguson.

Gassama, a graduate from PSG's academy, would have been the ideal replacement for the now-departed duo of Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence on the right wing.

The winger was pictured wearing the Scottish club's new Umbro training top ahead of a mooted move to Ibrox [Daily Record].

However, it seems Rangers may have to look at alternative targets as their bid for the 21-year-old is on the brink of collapse.

Sheffield Wednesday continue to baffle

Wednesday are currently under a transfer embargo, relating to unpaid players, an issue with HMRC and, failure to pay transfer fees.

The situation at the club has been described as "shocking" and "not tolerable" by Maheta Molango, the head of the Professional Footballers' Association [BBC Sport].

Gassama's departure, whilst a huge blow on the footballing side of things, would have likely gone a long way to helping resolve some of the club's financial issues.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri has placed an eye-watering £100million price tag on the club, even after the Owls suffered relegation last season.

Wednesday's unpaid wages mean players may be able to leave on a free transfer this window, leaving the door open for Rangers to return for Gassama should the League One club's issues remain unresolved.
