Rangers rising star Ciaran Dickson has been given the green light by the club to head to Sheffield United for a trial, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The midfielder, 18, is surplus to requirements at the Glasgow giants despite being a Scotland youth international and hailed as a future star.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Dickson has been told by the hierarchy he is free to find a new club.

Dickson is now headed south of the border to spend time at Premier League outfit Sheffield United.

Chris Wilder and his coaching staff are set to take a close look at the teenager and make up their minds whether he should be offered a contract.

Dickson, who signed a professional contract with Rangers in 2018 shortly before he turned 16, has been capped by Scotland at Under-19s and Under-17s level.

He has yet to make his senior club debut and is now set to quit Ibrox without ever doing so.

Sheffield United have another Rangers academy product on their books in star midfielder John Fleck, who quit his boyhood club aged 18 to join Blackpool.

The Blades have an impressive reputation for spotting talent who have been discarded by other clubs.

Wilder has transformed the fortunes of the club during his spell in charge and they punched considerably above their weight to finish ninth in last season's Premier League in their first campaign back in the top flight.
