Reading are plotting a move for Colchester United defender Cohen Bramall, Football Insider can reveal.

The League Two outfit are preparing to let the former Arsenal left-back, 24, go this month.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Colchester want a fee for Bramall rather than lose him on a free in the summer.

The defender's contract expires at the end of the season and he could walk away for nothing in May.

Bramall has previous Championship experience after playing five games for Birmingham City while on loan from the Gunners in the 2017/18 season.

His route to Arsenal was not a familiar one as he signed for the north London giants from Hednesford Town of the NPL Premier Division - England's seventh tier.

The Crewe-born ace left the Emirates without making an appearance for the first-team.

He moved to Colchester on a free transfer in 2019 and has established himself as a regular with the League Two side.

This season he has provided four assists in 21 games for the U's across all competitions.

Reading may have identified Bramall as a potential replacement for academy product Omar Richards who has started 19 of their 23 Championship games at left-back this term.

Sky Sports report Champions League holders Bayern Munich are closing in on a deal for the 22-year-old whose contract also expires at the end of the season.
