Watford made a move to sign Tottenham defender Danny Rose on deadline day, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Championship club swooped for the left-back, 30, for the second time in a year after previously failing with a bid in the summer of 2019 when they were in the top flight.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Watford got in touch with Spurs last Friday but the move did not really get off the ground as Rose was not especially keen.

The north Londoners were also not convinced by what the Hornets were offering for the defender.

He is out of contract next summer and was made available for sale or loan throughout the summer window.

Spurs had slashed their asking price for the England international but a deal could not be agreed.

He held talks over a move to Italian outfit Genoa but the offer being discussed collapsed.

Newcastle cooled their interest in re-signing Rose earlier in the summer after he spent the second half of last season on loan at the club.

Rose has been frozen out at Tottenham and has not been given a squad number for this season.

The writing has been on the wall for him since the £28million signing of Sergio Reguilon, who has slotted in at left-back to compete with Ben Davies for a starting place in Jose Mourinho's side.

Mourinho fell out with Rose last season over the long-serving left-back's playing time, footage of which was shown in the Amazon documentary.
