Bournemouth are in pole position to sign Rangers target Ivan Toney this summer, Football Insider can reveal.

The Premier League outfit have leapfrogged rival clubs in the chase for the in-demand striker after his 26-goal campaign at Peterborough United.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Bournemouth are long-term admirers of Toney and considered signing him in January.

They see him as ideal addition to help them get back up to the top flight if they suffer relegation this month and lose some of their star names.

But they have not been able to secure an agreement as the 24-year-old keeps his options open amid widespread interest.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Brentford have joined a race that also includes Celtic and West Brom.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry revealed a £4m bid from New York Red Bulls has been turned down flat as he seeks a bidding war to secure a club-record sale.

Toney has made it privately clear he wants to quit the English League One club in the next window after a sensational 26-goal campaign.

Despite talk from Fry of a £15m asking price, Peterborough are holding out for an initial £5m fee that could rise to £8m with add-on costs.

Toney was on fire before the March lockdown, netting 24 league goals - nine more than anyone else - among 26 in all competitions this season.

Since signing from Newcastle United, the front man has netted 49 goals in 94 matches as well as supplied 15 assists.
