FIFA team should be 'sacked and replaced' as 'unbelievable' Gianni Infantino plan savaged - Finance guru

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was always going to be playing with fire over his plans for the future of the World Cup.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Infantino has shown an "unbelievable lack of awareness".

The FIFA President put forward the idea of selling stakes in the World Cup ahead of 2030, to private investors under a scheme that could potentially earn him tens of millions of pounds.

Once again, Donald Trump is heavily involved, just like he was during the 2026 World Cup, but his plans appear to be dead in the water already.

All 55 UEFA countries have come together to boycott these plans, with countries from all over the globe coming forward to denounce their involvement.

The Asian Football Confederation is the latest to resist to the plan, meaning that, as it stands, Infantino will not reach the required 50 per cent votes threshold, and his controversial plan will not pass.

'What did Gianni Infantino think would be the reaction?'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson has been left frustrated by Infantino's actions, and is hardly surprised by the reaction.

"It's a masterclass in how not to do it. It shows an unbelievable lack of awareness. What did he think would be the reaction?" he said.

"And it's not so much the reaction just to the idea, but it's the reaction to how it came about and how it was disclosed to everybody.

"There's been no consultation even inside the FIFA council, so he's been working on this in the background. You've got all of the optics around Trump and Trump's family.

"It's terrible. You've got unconvincing rationale. It's not apparent that there's any real driver for this from a commercial perspective.

"So he claims that it's because an independent FFE could, or semi-independent, could capture commercial upside much better than it can currently do so.

"They're all working with the same agencies already. It's possible that the FIFA internal commercial team is terrible; I've no idea, but if it is, then they should be replaced."

What else does the FIFA President have planned?

It is not just the potential sale of stakes that has caused a stir amongst football fans, with plans being revealed for a bigger World Cup.

Since becoming FIFA President, Infantino has pushed an expansion of the World Cup, increasing the number of teams from 32 in 2018 to 48 in 2022.

Now, there are proposed plans to increase this number further to 64 teams for the 2030 World Cup, being examined by FIFA.

Many feel that this will take away from the prestigious nature of qualifying for the tournament, with money and finances the main reason behind this.
