'Getting serious' - Kevin Campbell delivers verdict on Everton summer business

Kevin Campbell has claimed that a sleeping giant has awoken after Everton completed the signing of Wayne Rooney on Sunday.

The Toffees confirmed on their official website that the 31-year-old had penned a two-year contract on Merseyside, which sees him return to his boyhood club after spending 13 years with Manchester United.

He joins what has been a mass recruitment drive by Ronald Koeman as he hooks up with Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Michael Keane who are all expected to star in the Toffees first team next term after moving to Goodison Park.

Former Everton striker Campbell, 47, is clearly excited by the signings that Koeman has made and has hinted that big things are on their way to the blue half of Merseyside.

"Isn't it great to see the sleeping giant awaken," said the Blues icon on his personal Twitter account on Sunday. "Now Everton are getting serious."

Everton have not only bolstered their first team options this summer, but have also made plans for the future by padding out their Under-23 squad with Boris Mathis and Josh Bowler while also snapping up wonderkid Henry Onyekuru, who has been immediately sent out on loan to Anderlecht.

Campbell spent six years playing for the Toffees and is regarded as a modern day legend by most of the club's supporters.

He also turned out for Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and West Brom before retiring in 2007 after a brief spell with Cardiff.
